Malilangwe & Gonarezhou

Explore Eastern Zimbabwe with our Luxury Travel to Malilangwe

Running along the Mozambique border to the south-east of Zimbabwe is the Gonerazhou National Park. This park forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park - a borderless area made up of three parks, including Gonarezhou, Malilangwe, and the Gonarezhou Transfrontier Park in Mozambique, where the animals roam freely from one to the other.

Within Malilangwe, 400 species of birds have been identified and it has the honor of the highest concentration of birds of prey in the world. You will also find a large concentration of Africa’s Big 5 game in this greater area, namely: elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard as well as many others which include giraffe, hippo, wild dog, zebra, and cheetah.

Malilangwe is also home to the highest standard of lodging in the area, at Singita Pamushana. Standards here are notably above the local average, making it well worth a visit.

GONAREZHOU - THE PLACE OF ELEPHANTS

Gonarezhou - in contrast to its northern neighbour Malilangwe - does not host as large a concentration of game due to its hot, semi-arid lowland. Yet it is named ‘place of elephants’ due to the fact that it is home to some of the country’s largest elephants, as well as the rare suni antelope and striped king cheetah. Gonarezhou’s greatest feature however, are the magnificent red sandstone cliffs called the ‘Chilojo Cliffs’ that are striking enough to be seen from 50 km away, and feature rock art dating back nearly 2000 years. The area is also dotted with quirky and much loved baobab trees.

The revenues collected from tourism from these areas are channelled back into the Reserve to further the conservation research and ecotourism, and to provide continued employment and development for the surrounding communities.
