Visit Lake Naivasha on Your Travels to Kenya

Lake Naivasha is a beautiful freshwater lake located about an hour and a half’s drive North of Nairobi, in the Great Rift Valley. With its close proximity to Nairobi it can make a great first or last stop on journeys passing through different parts of Kenya.

FLYING FLOCKS OF PINK FLAMINGOS

Naivasha is probably most well known for its seasonal migrations of pink flamingoes - flocks that are brought in by migrations from the larger lakes of Tanzania to the South. As water levels rise there, concentration of Algea in the water falls and the colorful flocks are driven into the lakes of Kenya and on to Lake Naivasha. Whilst the experience is seasonal and dependent on conditions, the sight of thousands of these striking birds moving in synchronisation with each other is nothing short of dazzling. To add to this experience, there are also boat rides available on the lake, and since there are no predators at all here one can track down zebras or hippos and walk freely with wild animals and the plains game that are attracted to the area by the waters of the lake.

This is a pleasant destination and an excellent destination for photographers and birders - especially during sunrise or late afternoon - when the late afternoon or dusk light adds a vibrant colourful life to the area, and of course to your photographs.
