A Private Wildlife Sanctuary on a Plateau in Kenya

Located midway up the escarpment between the Samburu basin, Borana and the Laikipia Plateau, we find the private Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

GENTLY ROLLING HILLS AND VALLEYS

This 31,000ha conservancy consists mostly of rolling hills and valleys of open grasslands dotted with Fig, Desert Date and Acacia trees with the occasional marshland, which create a beautiful quintessentially Kenyan landscape: lush and green on the green season, but drier rolling grasslands in the dry season. Grasslands are more open toward its southern side, while gentle hills and valleys more prominent in the north as you head toward Borana. As a destination, we describe it as pleasant rather than wild.

WILDIFE IN LEWA

Lewa is probably the best Rhino sanctuary on the African continent, so it is a fantastic destination for seeing both White and Black Rhino, which are very well protected in this conservancy. If you are visiting the Ma'asai Mara or other reserves on your trip, the highlight of your visit to Lewa will likely be seeing these impressive animals found here. In addition to those, Lion are the predominant predator, with the occasional leopard sighting too, in addition to Elephant, Hartebeest and other plains game.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT LEWA

With its relatively open plains and grasslands, Lewa can be visited at any time of the year and is a relatively good destination for guests visiting in the greener season, after the rains. Whilst grasses are longer at this time, you are still able to find and see wildlife and the landscape is green, scenic, and very pleasant. In the drier season, grasses do dry out, whilst sightings remain good.
