Samburuland is a rugged and semi-desert bushland landscape located in Kenya's northern frontier. This vast basin to the northeast of Laikipia is a true frontier travel destination along the furthest reaches of East African travel, and is the traditional homeland of the Samburu people who were drawn to settle in the area because of the Ewaso Nyiro River - northern Kenya's biggest river - for watering their herds.

The Samburu area is distinctly different to other areas that you may visit on your trip to Kenya in that a stay here is largely about the Samburu tribes and their way of life. Expect to meet Samburu guides, askaris and rangers - who are honoured to share their traditions with you - and to be able to visit small rural Samburu villages in visits that are raw, organic, thought provoking and all the same inspiring. WILDLIFE IN SAMBURULAND

Wildlife numbers are lower in Samburu than in areas such as the Ma'asai Mara or Lewa, but sightings are natural and unhindered, which when one looks back at the end of a trip we can realise in itself was a luxury, especially given that this is not the areas primary drawcard. In the drier season, wildlife numbers do rise thanks to the reliability of the river and its ability to draw in Elephant, Grevy's Zebra, Gerenuk and Oryx, which are some of the rarer species to be seen. Lion & leopard are present, with regular leopard sightings in the woodlands. The Samburu area has a healthy elephant population with about 900 individuals remaining within the reserve for almost the entire year.
