Hwange National Park is situated on the main road between Bulawayo and the celebrated Victoria Falls, and it covers just over 14 600 square kilometers. Named after an early San Chief, it is home to a vast number of animal species, with elephants making up the largest proportion. However, Its dramatically diverse landscape which includes stretches of desert, extensive woodland, lush grasslands during seasonal wetlands and rocky crags also host a large and varied number of other wildlife species.

Visitors to the park have the opportunity to see lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and wild dog - which is thought to be the largest surviving group in Africa as well as plenty of others. In total, there are 105 mammal and over 400 bird species, and it is the only protected area where gemsbok and brown hyena are found in acceptable numbers.

One side of the park runs close to the edge of the Kalahari Desert, a region with little water and vegetation. In addition, the seasons here offer great contrasts between wet and dry, and animals survive on what is left of sparse vegetation, until the fresh summer rains come again in November. However, due to the lack of water, man-made waterholes were introduced to help the animals through the dry season.

Hwange National Park has a few guest lodges on private concessions that offer a memorable safari experience within Zimbabwe’s largest game reserve.
