In the vast wilderness of Tanzania's southern areas we find its largest National Park, Ruaha. Here we discover a vast, expansive and superb wildlife and baobab studded landscape, dotted with impressive rocky outcrops.

SEASONAL WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES

This enormous habitat is home to a number of exciting wildlife species: a large number of photogenic Wild Dog run free, which creates fantastic opportunities for observers and photographers. Ruaha also has the largest population of Elephant in Tanzania, while large herds of buffalo entice the local predator lion, cheetah and leopard populations in the area. Watch these huge herds of elephant and buffalo parade through the wild landscape and maybe witness a thrilling predator-prey conflict with the lion, leopard and cheetah as they come down to drink.

A REWARDING DESTINATION

The rewards of travelling to this relatively inaccessible park are exciting wildlife encounters with fewer tourists and a more authentic safari experience away from the crowds of the Serengeti and northern circuit. Ruaha also combines well with a stop in Nyere National Park - the two parks have different vegetation, with Ruaha being wilder and more remote, offering different wildlife and safari experiences. We think Ruaha ultimately has better wildlife concentrations and viewing opportunities, although regrettably without boating and water activity options.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

Seasonality is slightly different to northern Tanzania; Ruaha has two distinct seasons: a wet and a dry season. The drier season is harsh with very dry conditions for wildlife, but this is a classic dry season park and game viewing is best in this season from July to October when water becomes scarce and animals congregate at waterholes. Then, November can be a great time to visit in a 'secret season' before rains begin at the end of November. Through the green season, conditions are lush and easy, with wildlife thriving and birding being excellent from December to March.
