Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

UGANDA

ADVENTUROUS GORILLA TREKKING SAFARIS

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - is located in a small, remote, and very hilly corner of southwestern Uganda, deep in the heart of central Africa.

This enchanting 25 000 year old forest is home to half of the worlds remaining 330 mountain gorillas - an impressive and almost extinct animal that shares 95% of its DNA with humans. This forest is one of Africa’s richest ecosystems and is one of the continent’s most bio-diverse rainforest systems, containing both lowland and montane forests, over 1000 species of flowering plants, 200 species of trees, and an abundance of ferns - all of which are experienced from the various trails and nature walks through the forest.

Other than the gorillas found here the forest is inhabited by a plethora of wildlife indigenous to this area, including 9 other primate species such as chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, and black and white colobus. It was also ranked the number 1 birding destination in Africa recently and an experienced birder would likely be able to identify over 100 species in a single day.

Since this is a true equatorial rainforest it can rain a lot, and it is very green. Terrain can be steep and unforgiving, and difficult to navigate, but well worth it once you reach the heart of the forest. As a guest there are two basic choices in getting there - either a long but very scenic drive of around 8 hours from Kampala, or a short flight in a light aircraft if you’re a little more pressed for time. For accommodation in Bwindi, we suggest heading to Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Volcanoes Bwindi Safari Lodge, or Gorilla Forest Camp.
