TAILOR-MADE TRAVEL TO UGANDA
Uganda is a tiny landlocked country in the central part of East Africa. It offers some of the world’s great mountain gorilla trekking experiences, as well as a host of other opportunities for exploration that are of interest to first-time visitors.
This is one of two countries where guests can trek to spend some time with the few remaining gorillas on the planet, and this is an experience on many people’s ultimate bucket list. If you’re after this, head to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the southwestern corner of the country. Bwindi can be reached either via a lengthy, although very scenic, drive from Kampala or Entebbe, or by air on a private flight, and the better choice depends mostly on your availability of time.
MORE TO SEE THAN JUST THE GORILLAS
There is also a lot more to Uganda - in addition to the gorillas - most of which gets less public attention than it deserves. It is very green thanks to its hilly landscapes and equatorial location, and as such is also very scenic - picture enchanting jungle scenery and mystical landscapes wrapped in the morning fog. There is a diverse range of wildlife to be seen including tree climbing lions, rivers filled with hippo’s, interesting birdlife, and a host of more typical African wildlife in the Queen Elizabeth National Park or some of the lesser known game parks toward the North of the country, such as Murchison Falls or Kidepo. These wildlife areas are more accessible as an add-on to gorilla trekking in Uganda than they are in Rwanda, the other key gorilla trekking destination.
The people of Uganda -adults and children alike - are relaxed and welcoming to visitors. It is also generally a safe country to visit if done correctly, and with a small degree of common sense. The city of Kampala is a little manic - as many third world cities are - and it is best to avoid the obvious pitfalls such as driving by road outside the main towns after dark.
