LUXURY TRAVEL TO KWAZULU NATAL
The region of KwaZulu Natal, lying in the Eastern part of South Africa, close to the border with Mozambique is not typically thought of at first as an area for safaris.
It does however have one or two interesting locations, that are unique in so far as they are closer to the coastline of the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean, this offering an alternate to classic private game lodges, yet still with some excellent game viewing.
Phinda Game Reserve is often referred to as the "Seven Worlds of Wonder", covering an area of 56 000 acres. Somewhat unexpectedly for the this region, it offers not only great viewing of Africa's Big 5 - including the rare Black Rhino, but also an endless list of bird species and is such an excellent destination for birding.
For keen hikers the highest regions of the extensive Drakensberg Mountains can also be found in the KwaZulu Natal area, where majestic amphitheatres of rock tower up thousands of feet into the sky, forming one of the world's greatest natural barriers between the different ecosystems and weather patterns of the tropical coastline and the drier, hotter hinterland.
For other interesting attractions in this area there are also the breeding grounds of a rare breed of highly endangered sea turtles and some first class whale watching along the coast.
