PRIVATE EXPLORATIONS TO VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Volcanoes National Park - also known as ‘Parc National des Volcans’ is a two-hour drive from Kigali airport, the main airport in Rwanda.
Renowned for its mountain gorilla residents, Volcanoes National Park is also home to five of the Virunga Mountains’ eight volcanoes. Each of the volcanoes is covered with rainforest and bamboo creating the perfect habitat for rare mountain gorillas.
Volcanoes National Park is famed with thanks to Dian Fossey - the amreican zoologist - who led a research base between Visoke and Karisimbi volcanoes that spearheaded the conservation of mountain gorillas in this area. Sadly, due to the rise in poaching in the 1970’s and 80’s and Fossey’s fight against the trade she was murdered, and is buried at the research centre next to Digit, her favourite gorilla. Visitors are able to go and explore the research centre as well as visit her grave as part of their trek.
HIGH ALTITUDE GORILLA TREKKING TOURS
The high altitudes, scenery and birdlife as well as the diversity of other animal species in the forest have made Volcanoes National Park one of the top destinations in Rwanda. This subtropical country is one of the world’s best kepts secrets for mountain gorilla experiences, as well as for birding. Our experts highly recommend this park for photography expeditions to see these gorillas, as the vegetation of tropical rainforest and bamboo create the ideal medium for photographers wishing to capture the forest’s wonderous species.
