ADVENTUROUS GORILLA TREKKING TOURS IN AFRICA
There are around 700 Mountain Gorillas remaining on planet Earth. They are some of our closest relatives, none of them survive in captivity, and they’re protected in only a few small mountain enclaves.
These Mountain Gorillas are the most endangered of three subspecies, and they reside mainly in the Virunga Mountains that form the border between Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in equatorial Africa. There are principally two countries that you can visit for Gorilla Trekking - Uganda and Rwanda - as we don’t recommend crossing over into the Democratic Republic of Congo for safety & security reasons.
Gorilla trekking expeditions & tours get you up close and personal to these amazing animals. Tours are normally done on foot from one of the mountain lodges, setting out for a day of trekking in the mountains, or two days for guests who would like a little extra. The day is active without being too strenuous, and is easily manageable by most guests. Mountain walks are impressively scenic as you wind your way through a blend of ancient volcanic mountain slopes and dense tropical rainforest.
At Robert Mark Safaris, we’ll make your plans to see the mountain gorillas easy, safe and efficient. We can also arrange gorilla trekking tours to Uganda and Rwanda together in one trip - this gives you two different locations and mountain gorilla experiences for your efforts in getting out to the area, so it can be well worth it. It works better in one direction than the other, so get in touch with one of our travel specialists and we’ll give you all the information that you need.
HOW LONG SHOULD I GO GORILLA TREKKING FOR?
When gorilla trekking in Africa, we normally recommend a stay of three nights at one of the lodges - this allows a full day of gorilla trekking, as well as a second day for some easier exploration of the scenic mountain landscapes while you’re there, or simply for rest and relaxation.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR GORILLA TREKKING?
We find that the best time of year for Gorilla Trekking is in the two drier seasons, mainly during June, July & August, or alternately during December and January.
